Symsonia Earwarmer – FREE PATTERN!

Nov 22, 2024 · Kaitlin Ostafew

Introducing the Symsonia Earwarmer – a free, absolute beginner crochet pattern filled with squish and texture.

The Symsonia Earwarmer is part of my “Bare Basics” pattern collection, designed for the very beginner crocheter! In October of 2024, I was asked to begin teaching beginner crochet classes at my local Art Guild. I had some previous teaching experience at the time and gladly accepted the invitation!

As I was prepping for the class, I realized that I did not really have a good collection of *truly* beginner crochet patterns. I strive to design simple and straightforward patterns (for the most part), but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are good patterns for the absolute beginner.

So, I figured if I was to start teaching classes, I needed to design some of my *own* ultra beginner crochet patterns that I could recommend to my students. Thus was born the Bare Basics Collection!

Along with the Symsonia Earwarmer, this collection includes the Mayfield Baby Blanket, the Mayfield Washcloth, and the Sedalia Scarf. Since I was inspired by the classes at my local Art Guild, I decided to name all of these patterns after town names in my county.

All of these patterns are rated for the *absolute beginner*. Any of them would be a great option for your FIRST crochet project! Ready to dive in?!

First, if you are completely new to crochet, I recommend you watch this video before getting started! This will walk you through all of the beginner information of how to crochet, from very start to very finish. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, come back here to get started on your Symsonia Earwarmer.

Okay, okay! Let’s get into this pattern!

You can purchase the print-friendly PDF here!

YARN

Bulky Weight yarn

I used Sass & Stitch Fiber (Sassy Bulky) in my purple sample and Fuzzy Peach Fibers (Cloud base) However, here is a list of alternatives if you’re looking for something different!

  • Brava Bulky from WeCrochet
  • Hue & Me from Lion Brand
  • Swish Bulky from WeCrochet
  • K + C Craft Roving Bulky from Joann
  • Mandala Impressions from Lion Brand

The most important thing is that you find a bulky weight yarn. If you are shopping online, you can filter search results to only show bulky weight. If you are shopping in-store, turn to the back of the yarn label and locate the skein icon – it should have a number 5 on it to be considered bulky.

FINISHED SIZE

The following finished sizes are purely just a guideline. This pattern is very easy to customize to any size you prefer. However, the sizing information will give you a reference point for customizing your earwarmer size to your needs!

*Intended ease is approximately negative 1.5-2.5” for Toddler and negative 2-4” for all other sizes.

**Finished circumference measurements are approximate and reflect the length after assembling the earwarmer. Before assembling the earwarmer into a loop, your work will be 1” longer.

*** Finished width measurements include the sc edging.

YARDAGE

See Size Chart Above

MATERIALS

  • Hook: 6.0mm
  • Other: scissors, flexible tape measure, yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain
  • whdc: wide half double cluster
  • st(s): stitch(es)

SPECIAL STITCH INSTRUCTIONS: Wide Half Double Cluster (whdc)

The full stitch instructions are shown in the video tutorial linked on at the bottom of the page!

If working into the foundation ch: yarn over, insert into the next ch, yarn over and pull through one (should have 3 loops on hook at this point), yarn over, insert into the same ch, yarn over and pull through one, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook.

If working the stitch during rows, you’ll be working in between sts from the previous row: yarn over, insert in between the next set of sts, yarn over and pull through one (should have 3 loops on hook at this point), yarn over, insert in between the same set of sts, yarn over and pull through one, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook.

GAUGE

4” x 4” = 8 sts x 8 rows

Meeting gauge is not 100% necessary, as you can make this pattern to any desired size by following the references in the pattern. However, if you would like to follow a gauge, I have provided instructions below.

Ch 11.

Follow the pattern instructions below for a total of 10 rows.

Block your swatch and measure in the middle to check gauge.

NOTES

This earwarmer is created from a long, flat rectangle. Then you will crochet the two short ends together to form a twist and a closed loop.

Written in US Terms.

Beginning ch 2 does not count as a stitch.

START THE PATTERN

The instructions for each size will be written as follows: Toddler (Child, Tween, Adult Small, Adult Large)

Ch 7 (8, 9, 10, 10), or ch any number for any desired size.

If you are not following gauge, I recommend chaining the suggested amount for your size, working the first row, then measuring the width of your work. Refer back to the sizing chart on pg. 3 for the recommended width for your size, then go back and adjust your ch count as needed.

Row 1: Starting in the third ch from the hook, whdc in each ch across.

Your stitch count should be two less than your starting ch, and will remain the same after each row.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 2 and turn. Starting between the first and second st, whdc between each st. Your last st will be worked at the very end in between the last st and the starting ch 2 from the previous row.

Repeat Row 2 until your work measures 1” longer than the finished circumference measurement for your size on the sizing chart.

Once satisfied with the length, you can move on to forming the twist of your earwarmer.

To form the twisted loop:

Lay your work down flat out in front of you. Bring the bottom right corner up to the center of the opposing short edge. Your short edges should overlap halfway. Fold the remaining half of the bottom edge over the top. Fold the remaining half of the top edge under.

Orient your work so that you are starting along the right side (left if left-handed). Ch 1 and insert your hook through all 4 layers along the right side. Yarn over and pull through all layers and the loop on your hook to form a slip stitch. Continue working slip stitches across this short row all the way across to the very left side, working through all 4 layers each time.

Fasten off, weave in ends, and flip your work inside out so that your twist is on the outside. And there you have it!

Don’t forget to grab your PDF copy here to keep this pattern in your forever stash!
