Introducing the Mayfield Baby Blanket – a free, absolute beginner crochet pattern filled with squish and texture.
The Mayfield Baby Blanket is part of my “Bare Basics” pattern collection, designed for the very beginner crocheter! In October of 2024, I was asked to begin teaching beginner crochet classes at my local Art Guild. I had some previous teaching experience at the time and gladly accepted the invitation!
As I was prepping for the class, I realized that I did not really have a good collection of *truly* beginner crochet patterns. I strive to design simple and straightforward patterns (for the most part), but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are good patterns for the absolute beginner.
So, I figured if I was to start teaching classes, I needed to design some of my *own* ultra beginner crochet patterns that I could recommend to my students. Thus was born the Bare Basics Collection!
Along with the Mayfield Baby Blanket, this collection includes the Mayfield Washcloth, the Sedalia Scarf, and the Symsonia Earwarmer. Since I was inspired by the classes at my local Art Guild, I decided to name all of these patterns after town names in my county.
All of these patterns are rated for the *absolute beginner*. Any of them would be a great option for your FIRST crochet project! Ready to dive in?!
First, if you are completely new to crochet, I recommend you watch this video before getting started! This will walk you through all of the beginner information of how to crochet, from very start to very finish. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, come back here to get started on your Mayfield Baby Blanket.
Okay, okay! Let’s get into this pattern!

YARN
Bulky Weight yarn
I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight Chunky in the colorway “Strawberry Quartz” from Hobby Lobby! However, here is a list of alternatives if you’re looking for something different!
- Brava Bulky from WeCrochet
- Hue & Me from Lion Brand
- Swish Bulky from WeCrochet
- K + C Craft Roving Bulky from Joann
- Mandala Impressions from Lion Brand
The most important thing is that you find a bulky weight yarn. If you are shopping online, you can filter search results to only show bulky weight. If you are shopping in-store, turn to the back of the yarn label and locate the skein icon – it should have a number 5 on it to be considered bulky.
FINISHED SIZE
The following finished sizes are purely just a guideline. This pattern is very easy to customize to any size you prefer. However, the sizing information will give you a reference point for customizing your blanket size to your needs!
SECURITY: 16” x 16”
CAR SEAT: 20” x 24”
RECEIVING: 36” x 36”
TODDLER: 36” x 48”
YARDAGE
SECURITY: 240 yards
CAR SEAT: 470 yards
RECEIVING: 1120 yards
TODDLER: 1500 yards
MATERIALS
- Hook: 6.0mm
- Other: scissors, flexible tape measure, yarn needle
ABBREVIATIONS
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- tc: treble crochet
- st(s): stitch(es)
- * to *: repeat
GAUGE
4” x 4” = 10 stitches x 10 rows
Meeting gauge is not 100% necessary, as you can make this pattern to any desired size. However, if you would like to follow a gauge, I have provided instructions below.
Ch 13. Follow the instructions in the pattern for a total of 13 rows. Measure your swatch in the middle to check gauge.
NOTES
Written in US Terms.
Beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
START THE PATTERN
The various sizing for the baby blanket will be written as such: Security (Car Seat, Receiving, Toddler). Stitch counts and rows for each size will be written in that order. Alternatively, you may chain any even number you’d like for your own custom size.
Ch 42 (52, 92, 92), or any even number.
Row 1: Starting in the second ch from the hook, sc. Sc in each ch across.
You should have one less stitch than your starting chain, and your stitch count will remain the same with each round.
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the first st. *Tc in the next st, sc in the next st* across the row, ending on an sc.
Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st across.
Repeat Rows 2-3 for a total of 41 (61, 91, 121) rows, or until you reach your desired length. Regardless, you should end on a Row 3 repeat.
Edging (optional)
Now we will work a simple edging around the blanket to give our work a nice, clean finish.
Ch 1 and rotate to the side of your work. Work 1 sc into the side of each row. Another way to view this is work 2 sc into the side of each “bobble cluster” since each bobble was created with a 2-row repeat. (Watch YouTube tutorial starting at 19:00 if you need help with this step)
Once you’ve reached the bottom, ch 1 and rotate so that you are now working along the bottom side of your work. This is the bottom of your starting chain. Sc once in each of the starting chains across your work.
Once you’ve reached the end, ch 1 and rotate to the third side of your work. Once again, you want to sc once into the side of each row (or, 2 sc near each “bobble cluster”).
Once you’ve reached the end of this third side, ch 1 and rotate to the top of the work. Sc in each st across your work.
Now we will slip stitch to the ch 1 corner of the edging to close off this round. Insert your hook into the ch 1 corner from the start of the edging, yarn over, and pull directly through both loops on your hook.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
