Sedalia Scarf – FREE PATTERN!

PinFacebook
Nov 22, 2024 · Kaitlin Ostafew

Introducing the Sedalia Scarf – a free, absolute beginner crochet pattern. Any crocheter will find gratification with this quick and cozy make. This scarf features the linen stitch, which is just a simple combination of single crochets and chains, yet creates a modern look and a solid weave.

The Sedalia Scarf is part of my “Bare Basics” pattern collection, designed for the very beginner crocheter! In October of 2024, I was asked to begin teaching beginner crochet classes at my local Art Guild. I had some previous teaching experience at the time and gladly accepted the invitation!

As I was prepping for the class, I realized that I did not really have a good collection of *truly* beginner crochet patterns. I strive to design simple and straightforward patterns (for the most part), but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are good patterns for the absolute beginner.

So, I figured if I was to start teaching classes, I needed to design some of my *own* ultra beginner crochet patterns that I could recommend to my students. Thus was born the Bare Basics Collection!

Along with the Sedalia Scarf, this collection includes the Mayfield Washcloth, the Mayfield Baby Blanket, and the Symsonia Earwarmer. Since I was inspired by the classes at my local Art Guild, I decided to name all of these patterns after town names in my county.

All of these patterns are rated for the *absolute beginner*. Any of them would be a great option for your FIRST crochet project! Ready to dive in?!

First, if you are completely new to crochet, I recommend you watch this video before getting started! This will walk you through all of the beginner information of how to crochet, from very start to very finish. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, come back here to get started on your Sedalia Scarf.

Okay, okay! Let’s get into this pattern!

YARN

Super Bulky Weight yarn

I used Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in the colorway “Fisherman” from Lion Brand! However, here is a list of alternatives if you’re looking for something different!

  • Tuff Puff from WeCrochet
  • Heartland Thick & Quick from Lion Brand
  • K + C Alpaca from Joann
  • Effortless Super Bulky from Hobby Lobby

The most important thing is that you find a super bulky weight yarn. If you are shopping online, you can filter search results to only show super bulky weight. If you are shopping in-store, turn to the back of the yarn label and locate the skein icon – it should have a number 6 on it to be considered super bulky.

FINISHED SIZE

The finished size is purely just a guideline. This pattern is very easy to customize to any size you prefer. However, I recommend following a size of 9” wide x 72” long.

YARDAGE

320 yards – 3 skeins of Wool Ease Thick & Quick

MATERIALS

  • Hook: 10.00mm
  • Other: scissors, flexible tape measure, yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • * to *: repeat from * to *

GAUGE

No gauge required for this pattern, as you can easily work this pattern to any width and length desired.

NOTES

Written in US Terms.

Beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

START THE PATTERN

Ch 22, or any even number.

I recommend a width of approximately 9”. Your starting ch will not perfectly reflect the true width of your project once your rows are established, but it is a close indicator.

Row 1: Starting in the fourth ch from the hook, sc. *Ch 1, skip the next ch, sc in the next ch* across, ending with an sc in the last stitch. (10 sc)

Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Skip the first sc from the previous row, sc in the first ch-1 space. *Ch 1, skip the next sc, sc in the next ch-1 space* across, ending with an sc on the very edge of your work. (10 sc)

Repeat Row 2 until you are satisfied with the length of your scarf. I recommend approximately 68-74 inches in length.

Troubleshooting Tip: Are you slowly losing stitches with each row? You might be missing working into the last space after the last sc of the previous row. Pull apart the edge at the end of the row and sc into that space at the end!

Fasten off and weave in ends.
